| Fetch Through Commitment |
![]() My Father, if there is any way, get me out of this. Matthew 26:38 Commitment. It’s a word that goes around sparingly today. It’s something society avoids and tries it’s best to get out of even after committing to a cause or an agreement. Gone are the days when a persons’ handshake would do or even just giving their word. Look at the contracts we sign today – up to 2 pages are used just to explain the terms & conditions of your commitment, you have to initial almost every page, sign a few more stating you understand what’s being said and then after all that, a good lawyer can still get you out of the agreed contract. Commitment is a scarce commodity in the world today. Divorces are at an all-time high, we go from one employer to the next, from one relationship to another and even in church we take our bible bag and leave at the slightest hint of offence to justify our lack of commitment. There are many things Jesus modelled in His time here on earth – too much to mention in a blog, but one of them would definitely be commitment. What we seem to forget at times, is, He was stripped of all His heavenly powers. He was as human as you and I are today. All He had was a vision from God and faith - the same as you and I. He did not have supernatural powers of commitment. He had an assignment from heaven to save mankind and the rules were clear – be born as a human, live as a human, experience suffering & pain as a human and die as a human. Jesus was committed to His assignment and to the cause of saving a dying world even knowing He would have to endure an excruciating death. Twice He enquired of God (Matthew 26) if there was an alternative option, but there was not and He stayed the course. His selfless act of love & commitment to the point of death set us free. Jesus Christ is proof that we as humans can make a difference in the lives of people if we are committed. The apostle Paul says imitate me as I imitate Christ. Surely that imitation includes commitment. Paul the Apostle was singular in his focus towards the Gospel – his commitment to the cause of Jesus Christ lead him into places where he would experience torture, imprisonment and many other life threatening situations – but he remained committed! All of us have at times in our lives pulled out of commitment, whether out of fear, selfishness, laziness, uncertainty, negative people, indecision or for whatever reason. At the end of the day it’s not about the reasons, it’s about our decision to remain true to what we know is right. Commitment according to the dictionary means “the act of binding yourself to a course of action”. Commitment is an act of your will to do something and to see it through to the end. It won’t always be easy to see a commitment through, but it will definitely be rewarding. Anything worthwhile in life will come at a price. Committing your life to this Kingdom, to God’s cause and to His church will be the most fulfilling thing you ever do. Jesus’ commitment to this world set us free; your commitment to His church will help set others free. So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. Galatians 6:9 |
