“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)

Your thoughts are constantly with you. They’re the one thing on earth that you cannot get away from. Take a walk through an insane asylum or a psychiatric ward. The people there are trapped in a mental facility but it’s mainly their thoughts that got them there and keep them captive. Your thoughts are the most powerful thing you possess other than your faith! Movies like Inception and The Matrix all delve into the world of our thought life and create powerful and though provoking (no pun intended) images and cinematic effects that capture our imaginations and get us thinking (the pun thing again)!

When we read proverbs 23:7 God clearly gave us a clue as to the key to creating the life we want or to avoid the life we don’t. You are your thoughts and your thoughts are who you are. You might think your thoughts are your own and kept secret in the chambers of your mind, but think again! Who you are or what you’re not, what you have or what you don’t is directly linked to what you’ve been thinking. Your life is a story of what goes on in your head, the life you live are your thoughts manifested and is on display 24/7! You might think you’re hiding what goes on in there, but you’re not.

Our tendencies as humans are to blame our lack of joy, provision & fulfilment on tragic events or difficult circumstances. To a degree they do shape us, but we still determine the outcome. Your thoughts are capsules of potential – whether good or bad. Blaming our lives on events or circumstances, just means we’ve surrendered our thoughts to negative faith or better known as fear. We start thinking about negative past experiences and how we can avoid them in future and inadvertently attract the very thing we’re so afraid of – all because of what we’re thinking. On the other side a person with a positive thought process looks at the events or circumstances and makes a conscious decision not to allow these situations to impact them negatively more than the actual occurrence of them. They decide to focus their thoughts on “what now?” rather than on “why me?”

The Bible tells us to take our thought lives captive. We need to take stock of our thoughts. Place them in quarantine. Investigate them and determine the root of these thoughts and decide what we’re going to do with them. Saying stuff like “when I looked again” is actually a weak excuse for bad thinking & decision making. Everything you do or don’t do starts with a thought. You have a choice the moment a thought enters your mind to either discard it or to embrace it. You are responsible for your actions, which mean you are responsible for the thoughts that form your reality. You can’t always avoid negative thoughts from entering your life, but you can choose whether you make them a part of your life or not. Renewing of your thought life starts with the word of God. You have to use the Word to shape your thinking and as you apply the Word of God you start to shape your life and ultimately build according to the plan of God.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NKJV)
